Title: All In
Author: Marta Brown
Published: May 28, 2013

On the picturesque island of Martha's Vineyard, there are two kinds of residents. Locals and Stays.

Local boy, Lane McCarthy, plans on spending his summer working at the country club to save money for college in the fall, while summer stay, Ashley Whitmore, and her elite group of friends are only there to play.

As the summer heat goes up on the island, so does the ante, when both Lane and Ashley must decide what they’re willing to wager in order to follow their dreams… and their hearts.

With stakes as high as the surf, and hopes as high as the midday sun, will they risk everything and go all in?

Ashley
“Good afternoon and welcome to the Field House Grille. May I start you two off with drinks or an appetizer today?” The waiter’s voice startles me out of my conspiracy theories, and I resume perusing my menu.
“Yes, I’ll have a long island ice tea and a white wine spritzer for the lady.” Gregory orders with confidence. He’s only a year shy of the legal drinking age so he may pass as old enough to get served, but it’s obvious I’m not old enough to drink yet. “And then we’ll have an order of the calamari to start and for our entrees she’ll have the sea bass, and I’ll have the filet.” He shuts his menu and hands it back to the waiter with bravado.
“I’ll actually have a bottle of San Pellegrino please,” I say, staring at my menu, trying to avoid the embarrassment of being carded and then denied, or worse, my parents finding out I tried to order an alcoholic drink, at the club no less. “And what salad would you recommend?” I start to ask, but the words get caught in my throat when I finally look up and see the waiter.
Whoa.
He. Is. Gorgeous.
“Well…our house mixed salad is very popular. It’s locally grown organic and is fresh picked daily. It comes with a light raspberry vinaigrette dressing that can be tossed on or left on the side,” he says, holding my gaze.
“Oh. Yes. That sounds… yummy.” The words come out all breathy, and I’m immediately humiliated at the way I must have sounded.
Yummy. Breathy. Seriously, Ashley?
“Then on the side, miss?” the waiter asks, a faint smile playing on his lips.
“Yes, thank you,” I say, feeling my face flush with warmth.
Apparently Gregory Chase isn’t the only boy in town who can make a girl blush, and by the daggers Gregory’s shooting the poor guy with his eyes, he knows it too.
Gregory clears his throat and pulls the attention of the waiter back on him. “Fine. We’ll have one house salad with dressing on the side and an order of calamari to start.” Then with a dismissive flick of his hand, “Now, go fetch our drinks.”
Go fetch our drinks? Is he serious? How can he think it’s okay to speak to someone that way? But before I can say anything the cute waiter lets out an amused laugh that surprises me.
“I’m sorry sir, but I’m gonna have to see an ID first.” The waiter looks not at all sorry to ask, which makes me have to hide a smile.
“You have got to be kidding me,” Gregory starts. “I left it in the men’s locker room,” he explains, but his confidence is shaken. No one ever challenges Gregory.
“I’m sorry sir, but without a valid ID I’m not gonna be able to serve you, but I’ll be happy to wait here while you go and get it.” The waiter gives Greg a fake smile and then me a real one. He clearly is enjoying himself.
It’s evident Greg’s not going to get his way, so he finally concedes, but without an ounce of grace. “How about you take your eyes off my date, and go do your job.” He levels the waiter with his eyes. “And just bring me a damn coke while you’re at it.”
“Will do, sir,” the waiter says with artificial politeness, giving Gregory an almost imperceptible bow before turning around and leaving.
This time, I’m the one who gets caught watching one of the waitstaff walk away.

Lane
“Dude, I just busted some richie-rich for trying to order drinks underage, and he had the nerve to yell at me for looking at his date. Too bad for him, she was looking right back,” I say with a cocky laugh before giving Mario a high five. “Man, it’s the jerks like that, that always get everything in life—the money, the power, the girl. Probably has some big fat trust fund to pay for college too.”
“Sorry, man, but try not to let him get under your skin, amigo.”
I know Mario’s right, I should just let it go, but I’m sick and tired of Stays treating us locals like we’re nothing. And who the hell tells someone to ‘go fetch’? What am I? A dog? What an ass.
I drum my fingers against the metal counter at the pass until Mario rings the service bell with a grin and hands me their starters.
“Here, orders up and good luck.”
I give him a nod then try to shove my jealousy and anger down when I enter the dining room again, but I feel it hovering right on the surface. I take a deep breath before setting the calamari in the center of the table and the salad in front of the girl.
“Is there anything else I can get you right now?” I ask, and it’s hard to keep my eyes off of her long dark hair, her light green eyes and her legs that go on for miles. Maybe that douche had a point.
“No, I’m fine. Thank you,” she says politely, and I wonder why she’s on a date with such an ass-hat. Either way, girls like her don’t date boys like me. Unless they’re trying to piss off their parents, which is fine by me, but she doesn’t look like the rebellious type.
I turn to face him, lifting my eyebrows. “And you?” I ask because it’s my job.
“Yes, there is something you can do for me, how about you explain why my silverware is off of the floor.” He holds up his dinner fork, but I don’t understand what he’s talking about. Off the floor?
“Excuse me?” I reach for the fork to examine it. I personally set this table less than an hour ago, and the silverware hadn’t touched the ground. Why would it? But right before I’m able to take the fork from him for a closer look he opens his thumb and pointer finger letting the fork fall to the hardwood floor with a loud ping that echoes through the dining room.
“See.” He looks me right in the eyes, a smirk plastered across his smug face, challenging me.
You have got to be kidding me. This guy picked the wrong day.
I calmly pick the fork up off the ground, bring it to my mouth and spit on the tongs before lifting my apron and polishing it until it’s dry and shining. So much for not letting him get under my skin.
“My apologies, sir.” I place the fork back on the table in front of him like I’d accidentally brought out the wrong appetizer instead of spitting all over the dude’s silverware. “If there’s anything else I can do for you please let me know, otherwise your entrees will be out shortly.”
I watch his eyes go wide with shock before walking away looking cool, calm, and collected, even though on the inside I’m totally freaking out. This is not going to end well.

Title: Geoducks Are For Lovers
Author: Daisy Prescott
Published: May 15, 2013

Food writer Maggie Marrion is just getting back on her feet after a horrible year, or two, or three. With their twentieth reunion approaching, she invites four of her closest friends from college for a weekend at her beach cabin on Whidbey Island. What she doesn’t expect is her best friends, artist Quinn Dayton and part-time erotica novelist, Selah Elmore, to play matchmaker. The two plot a surprise that will make the weekend, and her life, a lot more interesting.

Gil Morrow, a former grunge musician turned history professor, joins them as Selah’s date for the weekend. Facing his own ghosts, Gil decides he’s waited long enough to get the girl. With the support of college sweethearts, a hot lumberjack, a few wishing rocks, and the world’s largest burrowing clam, Gil reminds Maggie that forty-something isn’t too old for second chances.

Can we learn to love the life we have and let go of who we expected to be? What happens when the generation from The Breakfast Club and Reality Bites meets The Big Chill? Come spend a weekend with these Generation X-ers as they share laughter, tears, life’s ups and downs, old stories, and new beginnings.

“I’m fine sharing with Selah. She snores like a bear. I might need ear plugs.”
“I heard that, and I do not snore!”
“She so does,” they both say at the same time, and then laugh.
“I’ll find ear plugs for you.”
Gil brushes past her and drops Selah’s bags in the den. “This is cozy. I didn’t notice a TV in the living room and thought you became one of those anti-TV recluse types for a minute.” He teases her.
“Lord no! I’m addicted to horrible, embarrassing television. I like to hide my shame from company,” Maggie explains.
“So, this is where you watch porn?” Gil gestures around.
He’s flirting with her. Or at least she thinks he is. Two can play at this.
“No, silly. I watch my porn online in my bedroom like most people.” She winks at him.
Apparently momentarily stunned by the thought of her watching porn in her bedroom, in her bed, Gil takes a few seconds to react. She chuckles that she stunned him into silence. His shocked expression pleases her.
“Your room is upstairs next to Quinn’s. Ryan arrives Saturday, so you’re in the room with the two twin beds. Hope you don’t mind.”
Maggie walks up the stairs with Gil following behind her. She swears she senses his eyes on her but she’s afraid to look back. Instead, she adds a little extra swing in case he’s looking.
Gil pauses on the landing and picks up a rock on the windowsill. “Why do all these rocks have white lines around them? I saw some downstairs, too.”
“They’re wishing rocks.”
He quirks an eyebrow at her. “Wishing rocks? Like magical rocks?”
“Sure, mock the island traditions. You find a rock with an unbroken white ring, make a wish, and throw it into the water.”
“Do the mermaids and Selkies grant your wishes?”
“Ha ha. Not sure either are in the Sound. Wishing rocks are something my grandmother taught me.”
“They’re cool. Definitely.” Gil strokes his finger over the ring. “If you throw them in the water to make your wish, why do you have so many here? Hoarding wishes?”
She tugs on the sleeve of his ancient concert T-shirt. “You’re one to talk about holding onto things. I collect the rocks. You never know when you’ll need a little extra hope and faith. Plus, they’re pretty. I love how nature creates something perfect.”
He leans against the wall and nods at her words. “We’ll have to find you more tomorrow,” he says softly, watching her face.
“They’re everywhere if you keep your eyes open.”
“Kind of like wishes,” he says.
“Maybe.” She smiles at him before continuing up the stairs.

Blog Tour: A Sliver of Hope by Karla J. Nellenbach

Welcome to my stop on the A Sliver of Hope blog tour, hosted by YA Bound!  Click HERE to see the full blog tour schedule!

Today I have my review and a tour-wide giveaway for you!  Thanks for stopping by!

Title: A Sliver of Hope
Author: Karla J. Nellenbach
Published: March 25, 2013

My twin sister was the only person in the world I thought I’d known inside and out. Apparently, I was wrong.

Twin sisters share a unique bond, one that can't be broken by miles, time, or even death. Hannah and Hope Morton are no exception. When Hope takes her own life, Hannah loses a sister and a best friend, a catastrophe she isn't sure she'll survive herself.

With her family in ruins, Hannah is slowly disappearing, drowning in a sea of misery. Even her wild, energetic best friend can't pull her out of her grief. Desperate to help Hannah, her brother comes home from college, bringing his best friend Julian along, the first boy to break Hannah’s heart. None of their efforts are enough to pull Hannah off her self destructive path, though. Julian is the only one who can get through to her, working his way into her frozen soul with cocky remarks and genuine love that warms her from the inside out.

As Hannah works to find answers, she continues to uncover new secrets and people that reveal a side of Hope she had never shared with her twin. Alone now, Hannah must make a decision of her own: move on and start a new life with the people she has left, or let the weight of her grief drag her down with her sister.

Emotional.  Powerful.  Unique.  Those are the first three words that come to mind when I think of this book.

Hannah is broken, scarred, and completely lost.  She can't seem to move on with her life.  She's in a total funk after the loss of her sister... her identical twin... her best friend.  She can't seem to accept the fact that her sister, Hope, chose to take her own life.  Hope, who always appeared happy, apparently had a few things she was hiding from Hannah, as well as the rest of the world... and it didn't stop at whatever was bothering her.  Hannah searches for answers to why Hope would do this, and discovered more than she bargained for along the way.

Though this story centered around the loss of Hannah's twin sister, there was also a romance aspect that brought the story down a sweeter path now and then.  Just when I thought I would run out of tissues, the story would switch and have me smiling and giggling.  I fell in love with Julian right away.  Though he had his flaws - you know, being a teenage boy and all - he was still sweet, and caring, and had Hannah's best interests at heart.

A Sliver of Hope is written more as a journal - Hannah writing to Hope.  Questioning her and asking for answers.  I loved how creative a story it was.  The fact that we got to see inside Hannah, inside her thoughts and her feelings, really helped me to connect with her.  I could feel her crashing down, seeing no positive end in sight.  A loss such as Hannah experienced is hard to imagine unless you've been there yourself, but Nellenbach does an amazing job of portraying the raw emotion beautifully.

I would definitely recommend this story.  It's strong and often left me breathless.  It's one that I won't soon forget.

Karla Nellenbach divides her time between day jobbing, writing, and indulging in her Winchester obsession. The rest of her day is spent playing butler to a cranky old man masquerading as a housecat and two rambunctious puppies that closely resemble small horses. Born and raised in the wilds of Michigan, she knows two immutable facts: (1) it is entirely possible to live in a thumb, and (2) you definitely can go home again…you just might not survive the winter. Having resided in the sunscape of Florida for the last decade, she’s still on a quest to see a real live alligator outside of the “petting” zoo. Karla is currently at work on her next novel.
